Golf has become a far more physical game and the change in the players’ physiques is apparent. In particular, on the professional circuit, the ‘bigger’ guys who spent no time on their conditioning have been replaced by athletes who understand the importance of total body fitness and how this can affect their game.
In realising the importance of the body in powering the golf club, it is essential that as golfers, we spend time on our physical conditioning and work towards achieving our highest levels of fitness.
Whilst realising that not all great golfers, wither at club or Tour level, are not at their highest physical peak, it is important to question how much better they could play if their physical fitness was improved.
If we look at the undeniable talent of Colin Montgomery, who despite being as an eight times Order of Merit winner and incredible match player, with one of the best Ryder Cup singles records of all time, never achieved a win in a Major tournament.
It may have been that with an improved physical fitness level, he may have been better prepared to weather the stresses and strains that the body is put under during such intense periods of play. In maintaining a high level of physical fitness, as a player, the body is better able to deal with the mental aspect of the game and able to select shots that are technically sound.
In the example shown by Tiger Woods, who is not only technically gifted, he worked tirelessly as developing and improving his physical fitness and overall conditioning. This was apparent in the seemingly ease with which he could play and dominate a tournament for all four days and going on to win in formidable style. This he maintained throughout each Season and as World Number One, set the bench mark for his contemporaries and subsequent players on the Tour.
I truly believe that as golfers, regardless of handicap or ability, it is vitally important not only for our game but also our wellbeing that we work towards becoming the fittest we can be.
