Mental preparation is an integral part of the game of golf.
How many times have you stood over a 7 iron to a green and felt
good and then proceeded to hit a great shot. However, we have all
encountered the reverse- having stood over the same shot feeling
negative and proceeded to hit a poor golf shot!
It is well-known
that the brain controls all of the body's thoughts, actions and
movements. It is therefore essential that in order to execute the
correct swing technique with a smooth rhythm, we must have the brain
in a positive mindset.
The key to achieving
this positive mental attitude, we must ensure that we control the
brain and getting it to work in a consistent and positive manner.
This is an achievable goal which can attained by approaching the
shot with a preset pre-routine which should be replicated and repeated
at each shot and particularly when under pressure.
When you see
the top professionals playing in a golf tournament, you will see
that they all have their individual pre-shot routines. These routines
vary from player to player, and are all very different with their
own idiosyncrasies. However, one part they all have in common is
that they have a routine that is repeated and replicated regardless
of the pressure of circumstances. This is the key to their consistency
as top players!
As
an example, during the 2001 Masters tournament Mike Weir was timed
during all his approach shots in the final round. The time recorded,
from starting his pre-shot routine to striking the ball, was always
between 4.1 seconds and 5.0 seconds! These statistics are testament
to the importance of a consistent pre shot routine which must be
adhered to at each shot. This level of consistency enabled Weir
to go on to win The Masters.
Our belief is
that if you do not approach the shot consistently, then how can
we expect to be consistent?
When you book
a coaching session with Mark Govier, you will be taught how to build
a solid and consistent pre-shot routine with the all important shot
"TRIGGER".
